Princess Residents
During the mating season, two toucans (Ramphastos tucanus), also known as the white-throated toucan, begin to regularly visit the Princesa to make their nest in the hollow of a large arm of the Princesa, a magnificent 180-feet tall emerging iron-tree (Dinizia excelsa). Known in the region as angelim-ferro, this tree was the stage for many recreational climbs with tourists visiting the Amazon. Mostly foreigners, these tourists ascended to the canopy for a breathtaking experience, and a good number of them had the chance to watch this couple of toucans, increasing their share of emotions even more. The loving couple for nothing was never bothered by the human presence in the vicinity of their nest, despite our distance being less than 24-27 feet. To maintain the surprise, I never told my visitors that there was a nest of toucans in the tree, so when suddenly the toucan appears with its loud and shrill cry the wonder cannot be contained, and the emotion of the newcomers is so contagious that myself I am enchanted as if it were the first time.

Nose like a sword
The Great White-throated Toucan is a unique bird whose exuberant beauty seems almost a creation of fantasy. Scientifically it is classified as Ramphastos tucanus, meaning toucan with a large bony nose like a sword. It is also known by other names, such as toucan-whistler, toucan-cantador and white-breasted toucan.
When learning about the habits of this animal, it is not difficult to doubt its ability to fly. Its large and disproportionate beak, together with its small wings, seem not to favor flight. I have witnessed a toucan falling into the water while trying to cross a large river. This means that on long flights the toucan may not do as well, but inside the forest it shows its valuable skills.
In the small flights between the trees, the large beak becomes an efficient and feared tool, which guarantees different types of food, including fruits and even small animals. It is a bird that adapts and develops to survive in nature. The white-throated toucan is a symbol of the rainforest and its diversity. In the words of the Dalai Lama «it is a reminder to embrace our own uniqueness and celebrate the diversity of the world around us.»

The Glitter in the Eyes
From the highest branches of Princesa, comfortably lying in a hammock, climbers observe the toucans that live there: it is a unique show that will be engraved in their DNA for a lifetime. That’s not a way of saying it, it’s the account of several testimonials, made with an unmistakable twinkle in the eye.
