Riverine woman in charge
In the ‘white waters’ of the Solimões River, the ‘caboca’ woman rolls up steering the boat by the bow. I was using a 300mm lens and when I zoomed in on the woman’s facial expression, she had a sense of presence: she was looking directly into my eye as if questioning my interest and therefore I wasn’t that close. The port of Manacapuru is made up of floating wooden constructions, tied together. There is a constant movement of people, trade is intense between warehouses, markets, bars and various stores. So I was in the middle of many other people, but it is known that a woman notices when someone is looking at her. She feels the energy of the observer.

canoasThe canoe is a small boat, narrow and light, and daringly close to the waterline. With both sharp ends, it is operated by a wooden oar, but in the absence of an oar, the riverine can uses any piece of wood or even a branch. Like every sailor does
This was the first image of the woman approaching the port of Manacapuru. The captain takes her children and a considerable load with her. I’m shooting from the harbor floats with a 300mm telephoto lens. It was because of this lens that I noticed the exceptional scene: a woman with her children and carrying a load to the city. In those terms it is not so easy. There are many women canoeing in short distances, locally, but this one soon showed her brave face. She was carrying a sterndrive engine and was coming with the current, for this reason, before touching the port, she went downstream and turned around so she could lean on the pier with the current against her. It’s like every sailor does!

Manacapuru riverside
Manacapuru is a cheerful and lively city in the interior. Just over 100 km from Manaus, the city thrives on the banks of the Solimões River, which is another name for this stretch of the Amazon River. The ‘white water’ rivers are much more populated because they are more abundant in the production of food and resources such as fish, fruits, vegetables and roots, and Manacapuru reflects this abundance with the traffic of its streets. On my first trips to this city, the main movement was bicycles, but recently, motorcycles are dominating. The city organizes the sumptuous Cirandas Folk Festival every year, at the end of August, which I covered for several years with the same enthusiasm as the Boi-bumbá Festival of Parintins.
