The soul of the fish
The riverside fisherman knows the laws of physics, but in a different way from how they are taught in schools. When shooting the arrow, the riverside man knows that the fish is not where he sees it, he needs to aim lower, because of what science calls refraction.
There is an indigenous legend that says that, when fishing, for the arrow to hit, it needs to aim at the soul of the fish… Brilliant! The indigenous formulation of the law of refraction is simply brilliant. There is no need for further explanation, nor for obscure theories. The soul of the fish.
The riverside man was fishing in that placid tranquility of the igapóIgapó comes from the Tupi language ia’pó. Strip of forest with its own vegetation, through which the waters normally penetrate during the flood season. Many varieties of fish depend on the igapós to spawn, protect and feed their young. In general, the aquatic life of the Amazon basin is very dependent on the igapós because of the fruits, insects and small animals they contain. Therefore, in order to maintain the ecological balance, it is fundamental that the vegetation of the flooded areas is preserved. More, in a ‘furo’ between the Negro river and the Paraná do Ariaú. I got a great vantage point on a wooden walkway and stayed there all afternoon, also looking for the soul of the fish.

In the half-ebb
From the end of August to the end of September it is half-ebb, depending on the mood of the waters, the level go down until December. During low tide, peacock bass (Cichla spp.) swim close to the shores to feed. Archery is one of the many ways to fish them.

Fisherman talk
Even today it is a question of survival, the work is not easy in the countryside and every opportunity to get food is welcome. But that’s not all, riverside people like to fish, it’s part of their culture: fishing, fish seasons, capture techniques and the most appropriate places dominate conversations when men meet. The children listen to the conversations of fishermen, who tell stories of great heroic fishing trips: “I caught a tucunaré that was more than a meter long!” – “From one eye to the other…” adds the funny man ironically. The general laughter cheers up the group and the children enjoy and learn.

Poor visibility
It’s not just the soul of the fish that challenges the fisherman, the poor visibility of the water also forces him to make deep mathematical calculations about the movement of the water and the barely sketched lines of the fish.
