The jaguar, my neighbor 2

Eden’s Garden
In the Amazon, a highly unwanted neighbor is the jaguar.
But the issue is not whether to want it or not, the issue is that it can be anywhere, at any time, invisible and lethal.
This constant experience of ambush is always present in the thoughts of the forest resident. They may be brave or fearful, but the jaguar is the enemy and one must be armed to combat and eliminate it. Conversations in the countryside do not deviate from this repetitive theme. Just like snakes, jaguars are the embodiment of evil.
In the year 2000, when I made the conscious decision to live in the forest, I did not have this deeply rooted feeling of animosity. I was like an innocent child playing in the backyard. Due to a lack of knowledge and experience, unexpected situations can arise in the backyard, but innocence does not works at that frequency. So I happily, joyfully, and solitarily roamed the vast backyard of my home, going out to explore and photograph from morning until sunset. What remarkable moments! Observing never before seen plant shapes, ghostly insects, rays of sunlight that pierced through the treetops, and following the beam of light to its final destination, on top of an insect on a leaf, on a root or a particular plant. Synchronicities occurred in the photographer’s paradise.
But it was there too, the jaguar. How many times it must have observed me, how many times it must have been suspicious of that bright flash of light coming from my equipment.
I was completely immersed in my work, and I can believe that was my greatest protection, but when I began monitoring in 2018, I truly realized that it was there, and with a certain regularity: the impact of this naked and raw reality on my thoughts was devastating. I lost my innocence! I started entering the forest with a different energy, of suspicion, I thought about carrying a gun, but I thought that was too much, so I entered with a long, hard, pointed wooden stick, and I also thought that was too much… I was missing my innocence.
But nothing happens by chance, and now I was facing the biggest challenge of my journey in the forest. Would I be able to enter with serenity? In peace? Would I be able to have control over my energy matrix? Because this was the main question. And this became my main task.
This is still the main question today, in an extremely turbulent, declining world, where all values are collapsing, where there are no certainties, and every human being seeks firmness, and can only find it in the only possible place. It is in the depths of the being that the treasure is hidden, the only recipe capable of restoring the vision of a renewed, balanced, fair planet for all beings that inhabit it, including jaguars.

Very sharp perception
Jaguar (Panthera onca)
Brazilian popular name: onça-pintada, iauaretê
Walking calmly, the jaguar enters the frame from East going to West, in direction of my house. The magnificent cat appears to be a healthy strong adult…
… the jaguar crossed the entire field of the frame and suddenly stopped, showing only its tail…

Chimeric animal
… and, yet another surprise, the chimerical animal appeared again with its whole head in the frame… sniffing at the photographic equipment. The smell that was attracting the cat had nothing to do with the camera… it was my smell, despite the heavy rains in April that had already washed the equipment quite a bit, for more than a week.

Coming back jaguar
…and, 16 days later, I get another record of a Jaguar going in the opposite direction, away from my house. Rosettes (the skin spots of jaguars) are compared to identify individuals. Therefore, because the records show opposite sides of the jaguar, rosettes cannot be compared. We can only assume that the general individual patterns and the proximity of the two records points to the hypothesis of the same jaguar.
If you had two cameras in the same location, you could record both sides at the same time, thus facilitating their identification. The small number of cameras still does not allow this.
