Meeting of giants
A regional boat crosses the Meeting of the Waters, near Manaus. Negro river of black watersBlack water rivers, unlike white water rivers, do not transport material in suspension; its waters are acidic and practically devoid of mineral nutrients. So are the Rio Negro, its tributaries, with the exception of the Branco river and the Urubu river. Black water rivers are stabilized, with a bed formed of stone and sand and are born in the “Amazonian plain”. More meets the Solimoes river of white watersThe popular language refers with this term to rivers with a light ocher color, rich in sediments and whose sources usually start in the Andes. Examples: Amazon River, Purus River, Madeira River… More forming at this moment the Amazon river. It is a very special place, of immense force. Where two giants meet, strange beings can swim between the boundary of the two waters. Some venture and dive into the turbulent waters. It is said that some disappeared and were never seen again, among them the mythical Mura warrior, Ajuricaba.

The reason of vertical
Here is the same boat from the cover photo crossing a boundary between two different worlds: different temperature, different speed, different density. The two giants resist, and maintain their strong personality for a few kilometers. There is a time of the season when the great Amazon river works as a dam for the Negro river.
With vertical layout or portrait format, this photo complements the cover of the article. For example, I receive a request from an agency: aerial photo of Meeting of the Waters in vertical format. So I rent a helicopter and go to the location to produce the shot. But as an archival photographer, my operation doesn’t work that way. When a client requests an image, I already have the requested photograph, in vertical and horizontal format, because when I flew to photograph an industrial warehouse, I agreed with the pilot on a flight plan that included other interesting objectives in that area. This is just to make a file.
Archival Photography aims to build an Image Bank, where photographs are immediately available. In English, the correct term for this specialty is called Stock Photography. To enter this endeavor I need to clearly define the field of action of the photographic archive, in my case: Amazonia with a main focus on ecosystems and the peoples that inhabit it, excluding all kinds of negative images such as fires, destruction, etc. My purpose was from the beginning and still is to show the Amazon in all its splendor. Having defined this, the next step is the categories: fauna, flora, landscape, riverine, scientific research, folklore, etc. To further deepen my ability to find images, I then need to create a Controlled Vocabulary, that is, keywords. These are the entries that refine the search: aerial photo, close-up, macro, joy, flower, child, etc. It is very important to specify that this search that allows me to find any image from my file in a matter of seconds, this same search has to be provided to any interested person, with the same efficiency and without much explanation.

Contrast of the waters
I flew numerous times over the Meeting of the Waters, with all kinds of aircraft at different times of the day. This very special spot always needs something to compare it to, it could be a boat or even a shadow. It is not difficult that there is a boat crossing the two waters, but an important tip for photographing the meeting of the two giants is that the day is sunny and very high from the horizon, because as if our father Sun is close to the horizon there is no contrast between the two waters. In the era of photographic film this was very important, today, in the digital era, not so much.
