Colorful of the forest
The dome of the Amazon Opera House, in perspective with the Negro River, stands out in a long-sought framing of balconies and roofs. Produced with a Nikkor 300mm f2.8 lens, the photograph created the typical telephoto optical effect, the ‘compression’ of the planes. The dome and the freighter appear to be closer than they really are.
36,000 glazed ceramic tiles were given the colors green, yellow, red and blue, representing the colors of the forest and birds of the Amazon and with an obvious reference to the flag of the tropical giant.
Arranged like fish scales, 36,000 glazed ceramic tiles were given the colors green, yellow, red and blue, representing the colors of the forest and birds of the Amazon and with an obvious reference to the flag of the tropical giant.
The pieces were manufactured in Alsace and purchased from the Koch Fréres house in Paris. The metal structure of the dome was manufactured in Belgium by the company Compagnie Centrale de Construction de Haine-Saint-Pierre.

Modern Manaus
Modern Manaus Terminal, during the low water season. Large steel barges lean on the beach and form the pier where regional boats dock, bringing and taking passengers and goods. The edge of Mercadão has always been an important port for embarkation and disembarkation and even today it supplies the Municipal Market and Modern Manaus with exotic products from the countryside.

When the water goes down, the beach of Modern Manaus is discovered as it has been since 1669, when new residents arrived in the region. Fish water
The movement is intense, vehicles go down to the beach, where the boats run aground. There is a whole ritual that governs the shore: the porters shout with their sound signals, personalized, “fish water! fish water!” Nobody wants fish water on their clothes, the porter has priority and he is the creator of that priority.

Every little corner of Modern Manaus is self-organizing. A load of pacovan bananas arrives from the countryside, pulls up on the beach and a truck arrives, which receives the load and takes it to the point of sale. On the side, a regional boat, awaits its moment, already at night it will be full of people and setting sail for one of the many tributaries.

Roadway
In the Manaus region, the seasonal period of the Amazon rivers has an enormous variation, which can exceed ten meters of difference between the ebb and the flood. The Roadway was designed and built according to this natural phenomenon, so that its cylindrical iron buoys follow the water level, keeping the port operation always functional. They say there’s a big snake under the Roadway…

The Negro river of «black water» comes down from the right side, where the city of Manaus also appears. On the left side, the white water Solinões river comes down, which is actually the same Amazon river. However, it is from that moment, from the meeting of Solinões with the Negro, that the gigantic planetary river will acquire the name of Amazonas. There are several names that it receives along its course, being only the last stretch of the Amazon River.
It is a very special place, of immense force. Where two giants meet, strange beings can swim between the boundary of the two waters. Some venture and dive into the turbulent waters. It is said that some disappeared and were never seen again, among them the mythical Mura warrior, Ajuricaba.

Tropical Thémis
The severe goddess who dominates the former Palace of Justice has become tropicalized. Not even she, the celestial being, could resist the heat of the region: she sat down tired, leaned on her sword, lowered the pair of scales, her head tilted to the left and slightly downwards and even the blindfold that covered her eyes was gone. I didn’t understand how the left plate on the scale got messed up, and even the vulture, at Manaus’ midday, landed irreverently.
My friend Marcelo, a justice department servant, suggested that yhe goddess might have been drunk… I suspect this is Marcelo’s personal resentment.
There were several and varied photographs on this delicate subject, until we reached this frame that closed a chapter. The subject remains open, with an inquiry starting at the origin: who will be the author of the monument? The mystery remains, unanswered, despite intense curiosity.

Boardwalk waves
The Largo São Sebastião Boardwalk is inspired by the Meeting of the Waters. Made with light colored Portuguese tiles (symbolizing the Solimões river) and dark colored tiles (symbolizing the Negro river).
Four years later, the famous Copacabana Boardwalk was built in Rio de Janeiro, in turn inspired by the Manauara model.
The smart girl, nicknamed Zappi on April 3, 2014, curious by nature, tries to understand how the wave system on Calçadão do Largo works.

Guardamoria has a tower with a lighthouse built in steel and, at the time, its arc lighting produced a light of great intensity. The construction is an annex to the Alfandega building and has the same medievalist and renaissance style. Both, the Alfândega and Guardamoria buildings can be considered as one of the first examples of prefabricated buildings, built in blocks of exposed brick, preassembled, imported from England.

Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market
Main façade of the Market, also known as Mercadão. It was built during the rubber boom with material imported from Europe. Its cast iron structure was designed by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel, the same man who designed and named the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.
The photo was taken on a public holiday, stores were almost all closed, there was little movement of people, no traffic. Without the excess visual noise of a day’s work and with the corrected perspective, the architectural structure stands out with greater clarity.
