In the shade of the kapok tree #1
It’s April, the sky is overcast and about to drop the last rains of the season. Still willing to rise, the water level is already on the pillars of the stilt, and will continue to grow until June, reaching the floor of the house. The riverine goes straight from the stairs of his house to the canoeThe canoe is a small boat, narrow and light, and daringly close to the waterline. With both sharp ends, it is operated by a wooden oar, but in the absence of an oar, the riverine can uses any piece of wood or even a branch. It is considered the most used means of transport by riverside and indigenous people in the rivers of the Amazon. More. The foot of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) also feels the tickling of the water and still shows the marks of last year’s flood. There are several photographs of this same house in various seasons, for a few years Paraná do Ariaú was my way home. This allowed the planning of many images, which would be taken at special times.

In the shade of the kapok tree #2
In September, in the middle of the ebb tide, it is the hottest month of the year and the water level drops until December. With the same frame as the previous photo, this image is from 2008, while the first was produced in 2012. In the Amazon, the cycle of high and low water levels is repeated every year, sometimes in moderation, sometimes exceeding expectations. Excessive highs can reach and flood the floor of houses closest to the shores, while extreme lows greatly reduce navigability even for small canoes, isolating homes and communities. A curious coincidence is that in the two published pictures there is always the same man on the stairs of the house.
