Immaculate beauty

Immaculate beauty of Caularthron bicornutum
In Central America, it is popularly known as “orquídea de la Virgen Maria” and, certainly, its immaculate beauty justifies this association of devotees. The species name is a Latin epithet meaning “two-horned”, in reference to two projections of the callus of the plant. The specimen was photographed at the Federal University of Amazonas, and it is unclear whether it grew there or if it was brought by someone.

Caularthron bicornutum
Analog image produced with Fujichrome Velvia 50 slide film. Despite the difficulty of finding it, I loved this film. The low sensitivity provided impressive fragile sharpness. Fragile because it sacrificed a stop of exposure, usually at shutter speed, and that could cause terrible blur. This forced me to look for support or to strictly control my breathing. All of this was done without access to the result, so only after the film was developed would you know the success of the shots.
