Flying a forest
Coming from Fordlândia, we flew a short stretch over the Trans-Amazonian roadway and entered the Tapajós National Forest.
The Tapajós National Forest is a federal nature conservation unit located in the Amazon, created through Decree Nº 73.664 of February 19, 1974.
It currently has an area of 527,319 hectares. The UC covers the municipalities of Aveiro, Belterra, Placas and Rurópolis, in the west of the state of Pará.
The purpose of the UC is the sustainable multiple use of forest resources and scientific research, with an emphasis on methods for sustainable exploitation of native forests (Law 9,985/2000). The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation – ICMBio is the unit’s managing body. (Source ICMBio)

On the border between the deforested fields of the highway and dense forest, a strong wind blew, which put the ultralight, the pilot and myself to the test. This often happens in the fickle and bizarre Amazonian sky. It was on these occasions, several times, that I realized how really light and thin the ultralight is. It’s a pitiless feeling of fragility as the entire mechanical structure shudders, and the biological structure as well. However, a camera in hand multiplies the boldness, and it seems that even in the most critical moments, the most desired images are shown. For example, at this very special moment my greatest attention was devoted to keeping the horizon of the frame perfectly horizontal.
A spectacular landscape
The wind punished our ultralight for a time I managed to estimate at ten minutes, maybe less. It was that gusty wind that comes before the storm. But only a few drops fell and that made me happy because I wouldn’t need to store the cameras. Of course, the possibility of falling in the middle of nowhere pressed my mind, but the beauty of the landscape silenced the noise of the wind and the mind. I focused on the frames. There was a lot of choice and my finger faithfully followed a spectacular landscape.
We left the storm on the left side, we also left behind all the patches of red earth from colonization and, with a few minutes, the forest opened up like an ocean on all sides. We were starting to cross the Tapajós National Forest.
Despite the meteorological unforeseen, when it is necessary to fly I have no doubts about the best aircraft. The ultralight is my preferred medium. There are several advantages to take into account, as the ultralight opens the entire field of visibility in front of me, while the plane and helicopter only allow shooting through the side door, and I still have to convince the pilot to open the door or, in in some cases, leave it on land. To achieve the desired framing on these aircraft, it is necessary to change the aircraft’s route a lot, and trust the pilot’s patience. Ultralight offers a frontal generous angle of 180º, against less than 90º for other aircrafts, and lateral.

Community Forest Management
The Tapajós National Forest made it possible to access and promote the sustainable use of natural resources by the unit’s residents. Community Forest Management, carried out in an area specially reserved for this purpose, is an important reference for the sustainable use of the forest.
