Extremely peaceful
Tenderly looking at the camera, naturally smiling, they are the mother and child of a sloth (Bradypus variegatus). Sloths live off the impeccable balance between an exclusive diet of leaves and a behavior that values maximum energy savings. His smooth, slow movements are like a slow-motion video. This peaceful being could be very easy prey, but its existence is related to the development of a sophisticated survival instinct: it moves extremely slowly, but its slender arms launch powerful claws against the agressive visitor and are very feared.
When a larger predator like the jaguar climbs the sloth tree, despite its slowness, the latter manages to move to the thinnest branches, where the jaguar cannot reach it. The two can play this game for hours and it is not uncommon for the skinny sloth to win the game, either because the jaguar falls to the ground with a more daring step, or because it gives up because it understands the fragility of the branch.

Expert tree climber
The sloth can be slow, but it is an expert tree climber and can move quickly when needed. Bradypus variegatus stands out from other mammals in having an almost 360° view of its surroundings, proving to be a highly beneficial defense mechanism. This happens because of an extra vertebra at the base of the neck that allows them to turn their heads around a very wide axis, increasing their ability to defend themselves against predators.

Common-sloth (Bradypus variegatus)
The pair in the image were photographed in the Cuieras River, a tributary of the left bank of the Negro River.
I met a German researcher, Heide Mosbark, who lived in the headwaters of the Cuieras River, an extremely isolated area and far from everything. She lived alone, with the sloths.
Speaking on behalf of sloths, Heide declared: «we are not lazy, but very sensitive».
This work becomes, in a way, a tribute to this singular and detached woman, and, of course, also to the pure and peaceful existence of sloths.

Slow and steady
This is how sloths win the race. They are little Zen masters, who teach the value of taking life without any rush. They are the best proof that you don’t need to run to be successful.

Algae and sloth
What impressed me most about sloths is that they are so slow in their movements that algae grows between their fur. Yes, algae even give a greenish tone and establish a symbiotic relationship. Due to the high humidity of the forest, the sloth’s fur is highly absorbent and this creates an environment conducive to the growth of algae, which in turn, to a certain extent, mimic the sloths in the green and offer nutrients that are absorbed through the skin.
