Dona Maria

Dona Maria
Dona Maria is the matriarch who keeps the family united. Originally from the Juruá River, they migrated towards Manaus with only their will to work and a few essential personal belongings. However, they always carried with them an invisible and intangible baggage, built with the experience of the forest and the daily need to survive. To this day, this ancestral baggage accompanies the family’s activities: planting a manioc field, making flour, hunting and fishing… Her husband, Antonio, was a rubber tapper, so they have always been accustomed to getting their livelihood from the forest. “Dona Maria, may I take a photograph of you?” “Wait, let me fix myself up.” Then Dona Maria let down her hair, showing a certain pride and, as if reading my thoughts, sat on the hammock, right in front of her battery of pots, carefully arranged and shiny.

A simple and joyful family
The father, sons and grandchildren take care of bringing in the food and Dona Maria transforms it into delicious meals. Despite being a simple family with few financial resources, the table is always filled with flavorful foods. What fascinates me most about them is that even if the industrial world and markets were to suddenly disappear, their dietary habits would change very little. In fact, I believe they would even improve considerably as they would only consume the healthiest foods from their diet. In the photograph, Dona Maria is de-seeding the cupuaçu (Theobroma grandiflora).
