Matter of territory
Green vine snake (Leptophis ahaetulla)
Nothing serious, just a matter of territory made the vine snake face my clumsy approach. I arrived with my cameras hanging, fiddling with the quick change of a lens… sorry! I took a deep breath, slowed down my movements and soon the situation calmed down.
This slender snake glides between the branches of trees with agility and speed. Almost daily it is present in the surroundings of my house and sometimes, through the vegetation that touches the walls, it walks inside, hunting lizards. My children have fun with her, watching her movements and hunting techniques.
Because they are territorial and harmless to humans, these reptiles represent a certain safety margin, keeping other types of venomous reptiles away from the area. For this reason, I have always facilitated the presence of vine snakes, canine snakes, boa constrictors, jacuraru snakes, all of which inhibit more dangerous species.
Living in the forest without doors or windows opens up a wide range of communication with nature and becomes a powerful educational tool, especially for children, who learn to deal with and respect the ‘neighbors’ who visit human space.

Calibrated adrenaline
Green vine snake (Leptophis ahaetulla)
Photographed in Furo do Meio, a channel that flows into the Rio Negro, in the same sequence, the vine snake allowed me to frame it vertically. This is a fundamental rule for the archival photographer, although it is not always possible. The complaint was nothing more than that apparently frightening scream, and for a while the snake was posing and arranging itself in front of my camera.
A really effective attitude in approaching wild animals is the ability to control the internal level of adrenaline. The animal’s perception is much sharper and more refined, so its sensory organs show much more than a human can imagine. For example, when climbing trees, I sometimes came across a wasp nest and this was the most training I could have, as there is nowhere to run. When the wasps start flying over the intruder, the only way to get out of trouble is to dive within yourself, quiet your thinking and reduce adrenaline production. It is miraculous how, little by little, the hornets reduce the pressure and return to their nest. From that moment I can continue my climb, of course, with moderate and respectful movements.
