Bug reputation
The Jequitiranaboia or peanut head bug (Fulgura laternaria) suffers from a terrible reputation: they say it has poison, brings bad luck, and many other horrors. In my experience, and Geo’s too, it is an innocent and graceful lantern fly that occasionally appears near the house, arousing the curiosity of children with its strange form, especially its head, which resembles that of a alligator.
Once again, unfounded adult fears and a lack of understanding of nature lead to the creation of false or biased ideas. This can have a negative impact on how people perceive and relate to the natural world around them. These “adult ideas” limit the child’s ability to have a pleasurable familiarity with nature and learn about its wonders. It is important for children to be eco-literate and encouraged to learn about nature. A healthy and positive relationship with the natural world is the foundation of a healthy society.

A walking leaf
Masters of camouflage, the leaf insect is an example of mimicry that invites reflection, as there are over 7000 known species between the green leaf insect and the dry leaf insect, not to mention the stick insect. These insects reproduce an impressive wealth of details in the imitation of leaves and small branches, both green and dry: it’s as if, walking through the forest, the artist found a leaf, chosen for its capricious good taste, and on top of it outlined with a magic brush, giving life to the insect’s features.
How could one ignore the fact that there is an intelligence that governs nature and interacts with it? Would I ignore what comes from feeling? Avoid unanswerable questions with rational answers? So the current academic science has chosen this strange way of solving things… Ignoring what it cannot understand… Better times will come! Perhaps a new science that can integrate heart and mind.

Resisting the Itch
The wasp butterfly or mimic (Dinia eagrus) landed on Kinan’s nose. I said: don’t move, let me get the camera. Until I got my equipment ready, he bravely resisted for several minutes. These butterflies mimic wasps, they imitate wasps.
This trust that the child has with the animal world eliminates the uncontrolled fear emotions that adults build in pure and innocent souls.
Thus, the basic principles of eco-literacy are the ability to calmly deal and interact with the world of nature.
