Blue orchid
Acacallis cyanea are often found semi-submerged by flooding rivers with only the flowers above the water line. The orchid like very much to grow near waterfalls, like in the picture, taken near the Neblina waterfall, in Precidente Figueiredo municipality. Prefers humid environment with lots of shade or dappled sunlight and room for the plant to expand. Daily mistings while in growth are greatly appreciated.
This orchid blooms with wonderful faintly blue (quite rare among orchids), flowers accented by a purple lip, that last for 1 to 3 months, also known for its delicious perfume.

Dark background
In the background of the orchid (Acacallis cyanea) is visible the waterfall of Neblina, located near Presidente Figueiredo. The dark background was purposely sought to further highlight the orchid. It’s a simple technique that only requires the use of a flash, connected to the camera via a cable, this is how it used to work. The cable allows you to direct the flash light at a different angle from the camera. If the flash were mounted on top of the camera it would result in a shallow image. Shifting the flash left or right with a light diffuser creates those beneficial soft shadows that are desirable. On the other hand, if I decided to use ambient light, it would force me to select a diaphragm that is wide open. This would dramatically reduce my depth of field. Going back to the flash, the large amount of light in the foreground allows me to close the aperture, increase the depth of field and get a dark background as the light from the flash does not reachs the background.

About framing
Blue orchid (Acacallis cyanea)
At the time of framing, several factors influence the choices that will define the function of my photograph. If I am working on a series of images that will be used to edit a book, as is the case with this photo, then the need for several options for this purpose is present in the frame. To diagram a book I need horizontal and vertical photos too, I need a cover that can contain the titles inside the cover without affecting the visibility of the foreground. In the case of the blue orchid, the entire upper area of the image was reserved for the possibility of inserting texts or titles.

Pleasant invitation
The blue orchid was not on a tree, but on a rock that was difficult to access right in front of the Neblina waterfall. Even so, in order to maintain a certain stability and have my hands free, when taking the photo it is necessary to create some anchors, which, when connected to my climber’s waist, provide me with that essential firmness for the production of an image.
So while carrying out the task, the waterfall kept inviting with its eternal sound and with the fresh waves of water vapor that from time to time reached our improvised studio.
The invitation was accepted with great pleasure.
