Black panther

D32_0497v1

Black jaguar or black panther (Panthera onca).
The black jaguar is a melanic variety of the jaguar, being the main variation in the coat found in wild animals. In totally black individuals, when viewed under light and up close, it is possible to observe the rosettes. Despite being known as the black jaguar, it is just a natural variation, not a species in itself.
There is only one photograph in this article, the cover being a horizontal version. The photo was taken at CIGS, a forest reserved for military training.

Black jaguar or black panther (Panthera onca).
The photograph was intentionally underexposed (-1) to reduce background interference and show the powerful mimicry of the jaguar in the dark of night. This is the idea I wanted to communicate, invisibility. The digital development further darkened the overall look, focusing the light only on the eyes and mouth, where a mask was applied to maintain and accentuate the lighting. The use of masks is as old as photography: in the darkroom, when the negative was projected onto a sheet of sensitive paper, the photographer reduced or increased the exposure in the areas he wanted darker or lighter. For this he could only use his hands or prepare cardboard masks, with holes in the places where greater exposure was desired.
