An award-winning forest
The flowering forest of Paraná do Ariaú is a true natural wonder. Every year, from the end of August to mid-September, at the beginning of spring in the southern hemisphere, the taxizeiros (Triplares surinamensis) begin to bloom, creating a breathtaking scenario, due to its dense and intense flowering. These igapóIgapó comes from the Tupi language ia’pó. Strip of forest with its own vegetation, through which the waters normally penetrate during the flood season. Many varieties of fish depend on the igapós to spawn, protect and feed their young. In general, the aquatic life of the Amazon basin is very dependent on the igapós because of the fruits, insects and small animals they contain. Therefore, in order to maintain the ecological balance, it is fundamental that the vegetation of the flooded areas is preserved. More trees (forests with seasonal flooding) intensively colonized the banks of the Paraná (channel that allows transit from one river to another). The name “taxizeiro” is derived from the large number of taxi or tachi ants that call home the trunks and peduncles of these flowers. These ants, also known as “formigas-de-novato“(newbie ants) or ”novato” (newbie), belong to the genus Pseudomyrna and are mercilessly annoying, sneaking under clothes and even screwing the unfortunate.
As flowering reaches its peak, the forest transforms into a sea of vibrant colors, attracting tours of tourists to witness this annual spectacle. The beauty of this natural event led me to participate in the 11th Itaú-BBA National Contest in the Flowered Forest category. That purpose kept me in the area for 15 days looking for frames and special lighting, climbing the trees and literally diving into that sea of flowers. The pleasure provided by this blossoming journey was as rewarding as the first prize in the contest I won for the cover photo of this article. The enchantment of this forest is truly awe-inspiring and is a testament to the incredible and astonishing diversity of nature.

Flowered tree climbing
The large number of Tachi ants, which inhabit this type of tree, also called taxizeiro (Triplares surinamensis), is not very inviting. Nevertheless, I decided to climb the tree to photograph the flowers and, why not, enjoy the pleasant feeling of being in the middle of so much profusion of flowers… and the perfume, what would the perfume be like? I asked my son Geo if he wanted to come with me and, to my surprise, he accepted. There were spectators, residents of the area, waiting to watch our storm and our escape from the furious ants.
It was a fragrant, pleasant and sunny journey. The ants cooperated without any complaints. After all, nature is not that soulless mechanism that official science presents us with…
Pachamamita… she is smart, lively and loving. And she knows what she’s doing!

Big hug
Taxizeiro tree (Triplares surinamensis)
The child knows what he is doing. Hugging a giant with all its ants was the final act of the unique experience. What better could we hope for that day? There would be something just as intense: a night of deep sleep and highly instructive dreams washed down with serotonin.
