At the end of June, regional boats are sailing along the Amazon River towards Parintins. Coming from all directions, a fleet of boats converge on this unique city in the middle of the Amazon where, every year at this time, a magnificent, superlative folk festival is celebrated with monumental allegories. You have to see it to believe it!
Clearly, I am part of this festive entourage, between the two colors, blue and red, I have already chosen mine and participate in lively and cheerful discussions about the next winner. The navigation lasts two to three days, depending on the boat, and at any time I can take a photo of the Amazon River with at least three boats. Anticipated dances on the deck, in the light of stars and moon, weave new friendships, new loves, and prepare revelers for the festive week of Boi-Bumbá. The Parintins festival is considered one of the biggest folk events on the planet, and many wonder how such a small city can produce such an exuberant event.
I have an idea: the academic definition of antiquity still resists as prehistory. The common and official opinion is that before the arrival of Europeans, there were primitive and savage peoples around here… However, new research and discoveries made by a young group of archaeologists and anthropologists show a very different social panorama of the Amazon.
There was a great social mobility, the natives spoke at least half a dozen languages. It is like saying that a European could speak French, Russian, Italian, Greek, English, and German in addition to their own language. Without the need for banks or governments, or currency and regulations, the natives traveled, taking their unique culture to other peoples. We can say that, unlike voracious, mercenary, and warring trade, in pre-Columbian America there were intense cultural exchanges. Not that there were no wars, conquests, or plundering, but in general, the social climate showed a reasonable tolerance for diversity, and so knowing the language of other peoples contributed greatly. There were tribes whose only function was to organize a party, and during a certain time of the year, neighboring tribes suspended all hostility and met to celebrate. The famous legend of the Amazonians says that a tribe of warrior-women valiantly defended their territory against neighbors who wanted to dominate them. Known as Icamiabas, once a year, these women and their neighbors suspended all hostility and proclaimed a great celebration. Warrior-men from the neighborhood arrived unarmed and ready to love the valiant Icamiabas. From these relationships, children were born who would be very well taken care of in the women’s village. Next year, at the next celebration, the men would receive the boys to take them to their villages, while the girls would become Icamiabas. Not by chance, the region attributed to these women warriors is in front of Tupinambara Island (Parintins), on the other side of the Amazon River. This is the Espelho da Lua (traslate to Mirror of Moon).
