Dimerandra emarginata
A minute violet dot about 40 meters high from an adult and healthy kapok tree, there it was, enjoying the shade of a very sunny afternoon. Biologist Jefferson pointed his binoculars at the dot for a few minutes. “There’s something interesting there”. The rope was launched from the canoeThe canoe is a small boat, narrow and light, and daringly close to the waterline. With both sharp ends, it is operated by a wooden oar, but in the absence of an oar, the riverine can uses any piece of wood or even a branch. It is considered the most used means of transport by riverside and indigenous people in the rivers of the Amazon. More, as the tree was wetting its feet in the waters of the Paraná do Ariaú. The climb was very quick and a new orchid became part of our collection. We were in front of a perfectly flowering specimen, the Dimerandra emarginata. This was our routine during the year of the «Air Plants» project.

Ceiba pentandra
The Paraná do Ariaú is a channel that joins the Negro River to the Solimões River. The tree with a large crown on the right side is the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra), host to the perfect Dimerandra, pictured in the article’s cover photo. Samaumeira or samauma is one of the tallest trees in the Amazon, reaching up to 70 meters. Named Violet, our tree had an estimated height of 40 meters, therefore a young being.

Intelligence and feelings of Dimerandra emarginata
Orchids such as Dimerandra emarginata do not need soil to live, they are nourished only by air and rainwater. An intelligence developed over geological eons created this admirable and little-recognized skill. In general, it is still believed that intelligence is a human prerogative, it is still believed that the nervous system would be solely responsible for this quality of life. However, finally, there is recent research that points to new frontiers of knowledge, where plants show aspects that were not even suspected until then: plants have feelings and, even better, they have the power to generate feelings and this is easy to admit when we think about the state of contemplation that a flower induces in the observer.
When human science triumphantly announced that the human genome had been decoded, it was a general hue and cry that dominated the media for a long time. It turns out that the same space was never given to the disconcerting discovery that the genome of a grain of rice had four times as many instructions as the human genome. So, if the genome is the instruction manual that allows the construction of an organism, how could a human, considered the most complex being on Earth (and for some in the universe), how could it have less instructions than a grain of rice?
