Eternal playful
A wild animal on the banks of the Negro river plays ball with humans. Don’t think I’m working seriously to earn my day. No, I’m also playing, cheering, feeling that same joy in my heart, the ball bounces in my camera, I try to keep it within the limits of my frame and wait for the eternal prankster to jump out of the water, in that extreme situation that every photographer likes. Sometimes it seems that he is gone, the ball is stopped for an interminable time on the surface of the water and when the terrestrial approaches to try to grab it, then the toy jumps high and the playful being appears with that smile stamped on his face. The boto (Inia geoffrensis) has this jovial and festive nature stamped in its DNA. In the Amazon, he is known for attending the dancing nights of the ‘beiradão’: wearing a hat, dressed in white, elegant and seductive, the sorcerer enchants everyone, and even more so the ‘cunhantã’ he decided to conquer. He has been known to amuse himself by pushing canoes from underneath, especially if there is a woman on board. And what if she is menstruating, she wouldn’t even dare to venture out on the waters and even the traveling companions wouldn’t let her on board.

The city of the botos
It’s only because of the two cameras I had around my neck that I was able to resist the strong urge to jump into the water. However, these two cameras did not diminish my enjoyment of participating in the game at all. I had in my sights an extraordinary model of life, something that I always considered an ideal: total freedom to do what I want, without conditioning, except the universal law: the slightest gratuitous damage to other beings revokes the natural right to freedom. Certainly the boto knows and applies the condition of this law. The noble libertarian’s food is plentiful and has never jeopardized the existence of those species that feed it. And most important of all, by that same law, this aquatic mammal is undoubtedly a happy being. The boto has no real estate, much less furniture, he doesn’t know what commitments are and the daily food itself becomes another game.
What more could I want than to swim free and happy all day. Legends say that at the bottom of the river there is a large city of dolphins, where the party is permanent, where everything is a cause for celebration, where the banquets and the anticipated delicacies never end. There are humans who, more prepared in the shamanic arts, say they have visited this city and describe it as the most blessed place on Earth, they say that whoever wants to return to the surface must never accept any drink or delicacy that comes to be offered. By accepting, there would remain, enchanted for the rest of his life.

Pirouettes and somersaults
He holds the ball in his mouth and disappears at the bottom of the river. It seems that the game is over, everyone is waiting and, suddenly, the ball jumps out of the water, far away from the other players. I imagine the pirouettes and somersaults he must do down there. I imagine the photographs I could take down there…

What would planet Earth be without your presence? It is said that you and your ocean relatives, dolphins and whales, came from the Sirius planetary system, a double star of the first magnitude, the brightest in our sky. Surely there must be a very advanced civilization there. They sent you here to show these little human brats that there are other ways to live. I have many reasons to admire you, I know your relatives from the ocean, I sailed with them, I stayed for hours watching the jumps and games on the bow of the boat, I was amazed when the huge sperm whale emerged on the starboard side, throwing a strong jet of water to the sky, and the humpback, the mysterious singer… that I listen to and listen to, trying to understand the message.
