Domesticating a tree

Domesticating a tree does not in any way tame or change the nature of that living being. Domestication refers only to the conditions that a tree climber creates for that particular tree to be safer for the climbers themselves. The angelim-ferro (Dinizia excelsa) is an emerging tree of 180 feet in height. Named Princess, the tree revealed from the first climb how difficult it would be to take inexperienced climbers to know that magical world that is the crown of a tree in the middle of the Amazon forest. Princess was full of lianas, in such an intricate way that one could only pass from one branch to another with extreme difficulty. In addition, the tangle of lianas had already broken some important branches and it would not take long to break others. It was decided that I would do this cleaning job of that complicated situation.
It took a year and, fortunately, during that year I received a visit from professional climbing friends, arborists accustomed to pruning and maintenance tasks. They were excited about the idea of freeing Princess from the relentless lianas and leaving her free and healthy. Throughout that year, I made about twenty climbs with this purpose and Princess was radiant, opening a long season of activity with visitors who came to the Amazon with that special desire to admire the forest from this privileged viewpoint.

For years the Princess was a very special platform over the forest. As a climbing instructor, I had the joy of guiding hundreds of people to the treetops.
All these people realized how important the forest is and how it generates emotions of extremely sophisticated quality, that is, those people realized how contact with nature is essential for maintaining physical and mental health, more importantly, the spiritual development of humanity. And believe me, it’s no small feat! What is still little is the expansion of this type of experience that brings joy and pleasure to life and that, on a large scale, would certainly change the world. Imagine the depressed guy going to the doctor: let’s say this professional is not committed to the pharmaceutical industry… he is a benefactor and says to the patient: my friend, stop thinking only about money! Climb a tree! Take a cruise on a sailboat! Climb Aconcagua!
